The second annual Society of Vineyard Scholars Conference will be held February 3-5, 2011, in Seattle, Washington, USA. The theme of the conference is "By The Renewal Of Your Mind: Imagining, Describing, and Enacting the Kingdom of God." The conference will be hosted by Dr. Rose Madrid-Swetman, co-pastor of Vineyard Community Church in Shoreline, WA.
Our keynote speaker and external respondent will be Professor James K. A. Smith of Calvin College. Smith is a highly acclaimed Christian philosopher, theologian, and cultural critic with astute insight into education, worship, postmodernity, orthodoxy, and the Kingdom of God. His book Desiring The Kingdom: Worship, Worldview, and Cultural Formation won the 2010 Christianity Today book award in Theology/Ethics. A Pentecostal who has found his home in the Christian Reformed Church, he is a friend of the Vineyard with much of value to say to the Society of Vineyard Scholars. (Click to see Prof. Smith's website)
Alongside our regular panel sessions, we will also have special opportunities to hear from Professor Bo Karen Lee (Princeton Theological Seminary), Dr. Bob Ekblad (Tierra Nueva/Mars Hill Graduate School; author of Reading The Bible With The Damned and A New Christian Manifesto), Bert Waggoner (National Director, VineyardUSA), and others to be announced.
Six panel sessions spread over Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday morning will feature presentations of and responses to papers written by SVS participants, focusing on aspects of the conference’s larger theme. This intellectual interaction forms the heart of what we do at SVS.
Also, we will make time for prayer, worship, and prophetic ministry. We highly value the essential relationship between the worship and the life of the mind, and we will bear that value out in our time together.
Finally, along with the papers, presentations, worship, and prophetic ministry, we will allow plenty of time at this conference for people to interact and form relationships. Our goal is to develop and nurture a community of theological discourse in the Vineyard, and we are committed to allowing the time that it takes to do so. There will be a wine and cheese reception, lunchtime breakouts for people with particular shared interests, and more.
How To Submit A Paper To The 2011 SVS Annual Conference
All who are working on or have earned a graduate degree in any field are invited and encouraged to submit a paper for consideration that has general relevance to the conference theme. There are also four specific areas under the general rubric of the conference theme in which submissions are particularly encouraged this year: Imagining Discipleship, Doctrines of Justification, Epistemology and the Kingdom, and the Formation of Orthodoxy.
