God's Picnic: Stories from the Harvest Vineyard

Vineyard USA

VUSA: So tell us the story of the Harvest Vineyard, and the “Picnic in the Park”.

JM: Well, The Heartland Vineyard had a vision to plant a church in downtown Waterloo in the urban community. In order to do this, they knew that they had to establish relationship first. So, in the 1990s, Heartland had launched "Picnic in the Park", a free meal in Lincoln Park, a downtown city park, with broken neighborhoods all around it.

Mario Fernandez is an Associate Pastor at Vineyard North Phoenix. A graduate of L.I.F.E Bible College, Mario oversees Small Groups, Compassion Ministries, and Men's Ministries. His wife, DaNetta, is Missions Coordinator. They have three children: Lindsay, Matthew, and Grace.

VUSA: It seems there is a lot going on with compassion ministry in the North Phoenix Vineyard today. How did you get started?

MF: In 1996 my pastor, Brian Anderson, asked me to come on staff at the church. I had already been a part of the church for about five years. One of the areas that he wanted me to work with was developing a compassion ministry here at our church. The first thing we looked at was starting a food bank. It was a start up, we really didn't have anything in place.

Mercy Response Part 3: The Receiving Church

Vineyard USA and Ken Hanning

Vineyard USA talks to Ken and Jodi Hanning, Vineyard church planters in Galveston, Texas.

Ken and Jodi Hanning planted a church Galveston, Texas, just months before Hurricane Ike devastated the island in September 2008. With help from the Vineyard Mercy Response Team, the Hannings are serving the needy in their fledgling congregation and their community - even as they rethink their church planting strategies.

Vineyard USA: Tell us a little about how you came to be planting a church in Galveston.

Mercy Response Part 2: The Sending Church

Vineyard USA and Nathan Anderson

The Vineyard Church in Clear Lake, Texas, gained valuable experience working with the emerging Vineyard Mercy Response Team to aid those affected by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005—experience crucial to helping their more immediate neighbors affected by Hurricane Ike in September 2008.

VUSA: How did your involvement with the Mercy Response Team unfold?
